Gunner John Russell

John Russell was the son of Joseph William and Catherine Ann Russel, of Whitehaven, Cumberland. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne Forces.

Gunner Russell successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 109, from 27 March to 7 April 1944, and was posted to 53 (The Worcestershire Yeomanry) Airlanding Light Regiment, Royal Artillery and took part in Operation Overlord (D Day landings).

Gnr Russell was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
