Sergeant John R M Gibbons

John Robert Maurice Gibbons was the son of John Robert and Ellen (Wileman) Gibbons, of Sunderland, County Durham, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Gibbons successfully completed glider pilot training and was posted to 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, Army Air Corps and took part in Operation Overlord (D Day landings).

Sgt Gibbons was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 27, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
