Major John P Royle

John Popplewell Royle was the son of Major John Bedward and Mary Royle and the husband of Christian Dorothy Royle, of Sleaford. He was commissioned in the Royal Sussex Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces. His father was killed in action in Greece in 1917 during the First World War.

Major Royle successfully completed his glider training and was posted as 2 i/c to HQ 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Maj Royle was killed in action by MG fire on 20 September 1944, aged 29, in the area of the Schoonoord Hotel on the corner of Pietersbergseweg and Utrechtseweg, Oosterbeek, and was given a field burial 100 yards west of the Hartenstein Hotel. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 13 August 1945.
