Gunner John Mitchell

John Mitchell was the son of Frank and Bessie Mitchell, of Bury, Lancashire and the husband of Winifred Mitchell. He enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Gunner Mitchell successfully completed his glider training and was posted to C Troop, 1st Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Gnr Mitchell was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 31, and was given a field burial between Benedendorpsweg 119 and the Van Hofwegen laundry, Ploegseweg, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 14 August 1945.
