Leading Aircraftman John M Anderson

John McKenzie Anderson was the son of James and Elizabeth Anderson, of Onibury, Shropshire. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

Leading Aircraftman Anderson was a member of 6341 Light Warning Unit, Radar Detachment, Royal Air Force, he was given some glider training and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

LAC Anderson and five other members of 6341 Light Warning Unit were on a Horsa glider, Chalk number 5003, with their equipment, when they were hit by Flak and crashed south of Opheusden alongside the road to Dodewaard. There were no survivors.

In addition to the two glider pilots, the other occupants who died were Fl Lt John Tisshaw; LACs John Anderson, James Brook, Edwin Lascelles; ACs Harold Highton and John Swann, all of the RAF. All eight men were given a field burial near the crash site. John Anderson died on 18 September 19944, aged 20, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 21 September 1945.
