Lance Corporal John Lowther

John Lowther, the son of John Lowther from Kirkbride, attended Nelson Thomlinson school in Wigton, Cumbria from 1933. He later  enlisted into The General Service Corps before being posted to The South Lancashire Regiment.

Lance Corporal Lowther volunteered for airborne force when the 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion was formed from the 2nd/4th Battalion The South Lancashire Regiment in May 1943. He qualified as military parachutist on Course 72 which ran from 12 to 23 July 1943 at RAF Ringway.

In June 1944 he took part in the Normandy campaign, Operation Overlord.

Lance Corporal Lowther ‘Died of Wounds’ on 23 August 1944, aged 23 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
