Private John A Hammond

John Arthur Hammond was the son of Harry and Sarah Elizabeth Hammond; husband of Cecilia Maud Hammond, of Walthamstow, Essex. He enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Hammond successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Hammond was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 30, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
