Sergeant John H Gittings

John Harrison Gittings was the son of Frank and Beatrice Mary Gittings, of Walsall, Staffordshire. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Gittings successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to F Squadron, HQ 2nd Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Gittings was reported missing during the withdrawal to the river Rhine, aged 23, on 25 to 26 September 1944. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
