Lance Corporal John F Pannell

John Frank Pannell was the son of Ernest Vincent and Rowena Geraldine Pannell; husband of Vera Beatrice Pannell, of Horsham, Sussex, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Pannell successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 94/95 from 6 to 20 December 1943. His course report stated “Good parachutist, quick and alert”. He was posted to B Company, 8th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

L/Cpl Pannell was killed in action on 28 July 1944, age 29, and was given a field burial near Bavent and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 21 August 1945.
