Rifleman John Elkin

24 Mar 1945

John Elkin was the son of Thomas and Sarah Jane Elkin, of Drumquin, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland,, he enlisted in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and volunteered for Airborne Forces.

Rifleman Elkin successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Rfn Elkin was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 22, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 23 April 1947.
