James Watkins was born in Cardiff and lived in Birmingham. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Watkins successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Watkins was killed on 21 September 1944, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
