Private James Smith

James Smith was born in Edinburgh and lived in Peebleshire. He enlisted in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Smith successfully completed his glider training, and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Smith died in Stalag XIB at Soltau, Germany, aged 25, and was given a field burial in the POW cemetery at Orbke Germany and was reinterred to Becklingen War Cemetery on 12 August 1946.
