Major James R Wilson

10 Sep 1943

James Reid Wilson, son of Duncan and Christina Wilson, and husband of Joan Blythe Wilson, of South Kensington, London, commissioned into The Royal Artillery and then volunteered for the airborne forces.

Major Wilson successfully undertook Glider training and was posted as Commanding Officer to 2 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery. He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Maj Wilson.

Maj Wilson died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 28.

He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
