Lance Corporal James R Stephenson

James Ralph Stephenson was the son of Joseph Richardson and Elizabeth Jane (Bibby) Stephenson, of Westmorland, he enlisted in the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Stephenson successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

L/Cpl Stephenson was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 26, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 26 March 1947.
