Private James R Goulden

James Reuben Goulden, husband of Claire Goulden, of Pelsall, Staffordshire, enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters before volunteering for airborne forces in 1942.

Private Goulden attended Parachute Course 37 which commenced at Hardwick Hall on 2 November 1942 before moving on to RAF Ringway from 12 to 27 November 1942.

He was then posted to 3 Platoon, R Company, the 1st Battalion the Parachute Regiment.

Pte Goulden served in Sicily and Italy before returning to England.

He deployed with the battalion for the divisional airborne assault to capture the Rhine crossings at Arnhem, as part of Operation Market Garden, and parachuted onto DZ-X on Sunday 17 September 1944.

Pte Goulden was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 32. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on Panel 9 the Memorial at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
