Private James K Hunter

James Kirk Hunter was the son of James Kirk and Annie Hunter and the husband of Mary Hunter, of South Dumfriesshire. He enlisted into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Hunter successfully completed his glider training and was posted to HQ (Pioneers), 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Hunter was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 36, and was given a field burial near the junction of Oranjeweg and Bothaweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 August 1945.
