Private James Johnson

17 Sep 1944

James Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs G Johnson, of Coppull, Lancashire and husband of Ina Johnson, of Carlisle, enlisted into The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Johnson successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to C Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Johnson was known to have been shot in the leg and died of his wounds on 17 September 1944, aged 29. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
