Sergeant Jack Thorpe

13 Nov 1919 -

Jack Thorpe joined the Army in January 1940 and was posted to the Infantry Training Center at Richmond to join the Green Howards. 

He remained a Green Howard until October 1943 after which he volunteered to join the  airborne forces. He successfully completed  his parachute jump instruction at RAF Ringway, course 90 in November 1943. Then was subsequently posted to the 12th Parachute Battalion. 

Parachuting into Normandy on D-Day was eventful and he was reported missing on 12 June after sustaining blast injuries. After recuperating he rejoined and remained with the Battalion until again being reported missing, this time in January 1945. Jack became a POW until he was repatriated in April 1945,
 

He left the Army in 1946 only to rejoin in January 1951. He finally left the Army in July 1970.
