Sergeant Jack Rawlinson

Jack Rawlinson, son of Mrs E. J. Rawlinson, of Burnley, Lancashire, enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and transferred to the Royal Army Medical Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Rawlinson served in 93 (Airborne) Composite Company RASC.  He later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Sgt Rawlinson.

Sgt Rawlinson died at sea on 10 September 1943. His body was recovered and given a field burial. He was later exhumed and re-interred in Bari War Cemetery on 20 October 1944.
