Jack Barter enlisted in The Queen's Royal West Surry Regiment 28 May 1940.

He transferred to 'Depot School Airborne Forces AAC 15 June 1943. He conducted his parachute jump training at RAF Ringway on Course 73. This course ran from 19-28 July 1943. His instructor noted this about his performance: "Good performer, has done well throughout the course"

He was posted to The 6th Para Bn, The Royal Welch. He took part in operations in Italy and was awarded the MM. 

1 September 1944 he transferred back to The Queen's with a number of other Queen's men. The now Sgt Jack Barter now serving with 2/7th The Queen's Regiment D Coy, was awarded the DCM, on 16 April 'near Menato'.  

On 17 January 1946 he transferred to The East Surrey's.
