Ian William Barefoot enlisted into The Parachute Regiment in November 1965 into 299 Platoon (Pln) at Para Depot. His Pln Sergeant (Sgt) was Chay Blythe.

After completing training in May 1966 he was posted to 7 Pln, C Company, 1 PARA. His first active service posting was to Aden from May to November 1967 when he joined the Regimental Aid Post (RAP) under Sgt Ken Dawes.

After two years spent with the RAP including his first tour of Northern Ireland, Private Barefoot then went to the Intelligence Section as battalion photographer. Deciding he wanted to learn more he transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) in January 1971.

After a tour to Bahrain,  Ian Barefoot returned to airborne forces as a Lance Corporal in the Stores Section, 1 Parachute Logistic Regiment at Old Sarum in September 1971.

Later promoted to Corporal, Ian Barefoot went to Cyprus on a United Nations tour in 1974. He was due to be demobbed in November but broke his pelvis whilst backloading a Ferret to Dekhalia.

A spell at the Joint services Medical Rehabilitation Unit (JSMRU) Chessington followed with fellow Paras Dave Richie (3 PARA) and Jim Brennan.

During his military career Cpl Barefoot deployed to Aden, Canada, Bahrain, Kenya, Northern Ireland, Denmark and Cyprus.

Cpl Barefoot was demobbed in January 1975 and joined the Sussex Police.
