Corporal Herbert J Bannister

31 Jul 1916 - 24 Mar 1945

Herbert John Bannister was the son of Ernest and Alice Mary (Hockley) Bannister, of Ascot, Berkshire; husband of Evelyn Laurie (Wigmore) Bannister, married in Reading on 15 June 1940, of Sunninghill, Ascot. He enlisted in The Ox and Bucks Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Bannister successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and took part in operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Cpl Bannister was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 28, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 16 April 1947.
