Herbert was born in Crediton & enlisted in January 1933.  His first posting was in Calcutta in 1934. He got married 6 January 1940, and later became a father to 3 girls.

He took part in Op Overlord, the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 with A Coy, 12 Battalion, The Devonshire Regiment. Part of the 6 Airlanding Brigade, 6 Airborne Division.
