Lance Corporal Herbert B Spooner

Herbert Benjamin Spooner was the son of Benjamin and Lily Spooner. His mother died in March 1919 and his father later married Helen Spooner; he was the husband of Irene Spooner, of Tamworth, Staffordshire, and enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Spooner successfully completed his glider training, and was posted to HQ Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Spooner drowned on 26 September 1944, aged 27, during the withdrawal from Oosterbeek. His body was washed up on the bank of the river Lek on 15 November 1944, and he was buried in the Schalkwijk Roman Catholic Cemetery, Utrecht.
