Private Harry Dunk

Harry Dunk was the son of Harry George and Nellie Dunk, of Basingstoke, Hampshire, he enlisted in the General Service Corps, and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Dunk successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 81A from 6 to 16 September 1943. His course report stated “Very nervous at first, improved steadily.” He was posted to C Company, 12 Platoon, 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Dunk was killed in action on 7 June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial at Le Mesnill and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 26 June 1945.
