Corporal Harold J Whitehead

Harold James Whitehead was the husband of Olive Whitehead, of Greenwich, London. He enlisted in 8 Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Whitehead successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 4 on 17 to 23 December 1941, and was posted to B Company, 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Cpl Whitehead was killed in action on 24 September 1944, aged 27, and was given a field burial in the garden of the Ter Horst family, Benedendorpsweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 6 August 1945.
