Gerard Henry Dearlove Ford was the son of Henry Joseph and Jessie Kate (Rose) Ford; married April 1939, Millicent Jane (Gilbert) Ford. He was serving with the South Lancashire Regiment at the outbreak of war.

Lieutenant Colonel Ford successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 12 from 20 March to 1 April 1942 and was attached to H.Q. 6th Airborne Division. He took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy), The Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Lt/Col Ford was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 33, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 12 April 1947.
