Private George W Russell

George William Russell was the son of Harold and Jessie Russell, of Loughborough, Leicestershire. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Russell successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course number 90, from 1 to 13 November 1943. His course report stated ‘Abnormally nervous but greatly improved, satisfactory.’ He was in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was attached to 7 Platoon, C Company, 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Russell was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial in a mass grave of 14 at a road junction. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 August 1945.
