Gunner George R Lakin

George Riley Lakin was the son of George and Clara Lakin, of Shepshed, Leicestershire. He enlisted in The General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Gunner Lakin successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1 Airlanding Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Gnr Lakin was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 29. He was taken to the Regimental Aid Post at the Ter Horst house by Gnr Edward Munday, but died on the way. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
