Corporal George Elvey Loos Howell

Born October 1918. Joined the RAMC as a Private in circa 1939, within the 24th Ambulance Train Unit.

February 1940 sent to Norway (Lofoten Islands) to bring wounded through Sweden to a Norwegian port for return to Britain. On return to the UK was posted to 224 Field Ambulance as Corporal. Volunteered to join the paratroops and trained in Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire.

Following training was posted to Bulford where the 16th Parachute Field Ambulance of the 1st Parachute Brigade was formed. November 1942 flew to Gibraltar en route to Algiers (Maison Blanche) and from there to Tunisia (Happy Valley).

Dropped into Sicily as part of the invasion force and then onto Italy landing in Taranto before, eventually, returning to England. Part of "C" Company, was then dispatched from a small airfield outside Grantham to Arnhem at the North end of the Bridge.Was captured and remained a PoW for the duration of the war in the valley of the Salzac river.

Died April 2000.
