Lance Corporal George E H Long

24 Sep 1944

George Edward Hearn Long, son of Jasper and Beatrice Long and husband of Daphne Long, of Andover, Hampshire, enlisted in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Long successfully completed Glider training and was posted to D Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion the Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Long was killed in action on 24 September 1944, aged 22. He was originally given a field burial by the Dutch Red Cross on 2 October 1944 in the garden of a house on Van Borsselenweg and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 3 September 1945.
