Private Frederick Smith

Private Frederick Smith, son of Selina Smith, of Basingstoke, Hampshire enlisted with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, and may have served for a time with Prince Albert's Somerset Light Infantry before transferring to 3 Platoon, A Coy, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Normandy campaign, during Op Overlord.

As a Bren gunner, he was killed when Battalion soldiers came under attack on 6 June 1944. Lt Hunter, who was next to him at the time, received wounds to his arm. He died aged 34 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
