Corporal Frederick Murphy

Frederick Murphy was born in Stirling, and lived in Clackmannanshire, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Murphy successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 128 from 6 to 21 August 1944. His course report stated “Good Performer, good influence on section”. He was posted to C Company, 8th Battalion the Parachute Regiment, and took part in, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Cpl Murphy was killed in action on 28 March 1945, aged 29, whilst taking part in Operation Varsity and was given a field burial near Rhade, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 13 May 1947.
