Private Francis E Jarvis

Francis Edward Jarvis, son of Henry and Sarah Jarvis, of Sunderland, County Durham, enlisted into The Green Howards and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Jarvis successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to B Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Jarvis was killed in action whilst in pursuit of withdrawing German troops in the Westerbouwing area, west of the restaurant building, on 21 September 1944, aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
