Private Ernest W P McDonough

Ernest William Patrick McDonough was the son of Ernest William and Elizabeth Sarah (Amphlett) McDonough, of Lambeth, London; husband of Helen Frances (Kirkman) McDonough, of Lambeth, London. They married in January 1940. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private McDonough successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte McDonough was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 29, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 21 March 1947.
