Ernest Mariel Wyss, son of Fritz and Florence Wyss, of Chester, was granted a commission and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Captain Wyss successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Capt Wyss was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 25, and was given a field burial in the Moscowa General Cemetery at Arnhem and re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 27 August 1945, where his grave was positively identified in 1981.
