Lance Corporal Ernest J Hookway

Lance Corporal Ernest John Hookway was from Barnstaple in Devon.

He completed parachute training course 108 at RAF Ringway between the 19 and 31 March 1944, where he was described as "Confident and capable. A good show". LCpl Hookway served with No 4 Section, 1st Airborne Division Provost Company.

L/Cpl Hookway parachuted into Arnhem on 18 September 1944.  During the jump he was shot and died before reaching the ground, his harness having been caught in the trees.

L/Cpl Hookway died aged 23 years old and is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
