Private Ernest J Elmer

Ernest James Elmer, son of Ernest and Lizzie Elmer, of Barton Mills, Suffolk, enlisted into the Essex Regiment and then volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Elmer successfully completed his glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte Elmer was killed in action on Monday, 2 April 1945, near the Dortmund- Ems Canal, aged 30. He was originally given a field burial just east of Ladbergen, Germany, and was re-interred to the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 17 May 1947.
