Private Ernest Finchett

Ernest Finchett was born and lived in Denbighshire. He enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Finchett successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Finchett was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 29, when a shell hit his trench south of the Old Church on Benedendorpsweg, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
