Private Edward Smith

18 Sep 1944

Edward Smith, son of Albert Edward and Alice Smith, of Yorkshire, enlisted into The West Yorkshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Smith successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to A Company 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Smith was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 25. He was originally given a field burial in the middle of a Landing Zone (LZ) near a Glider and was reinterred to Arnhem War Cemetery on 31 October 1945.
