Edward Eldred, the son of Captain William and Kate Eldred, of Kingsthorpe, Northampton, enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Eldred undertook parachute training on No 34 Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 22 to 27 October 1942, he was posted to 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion..
He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Cpl Eldred.
Cpl Eldred died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 26.
He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
