Sergeant Douglas J Day

Douglas John Day enlisted into the Somerset Light Infantry and was serving with 10th Battalion, SLI, when it was turned over to airborne duties in 1942, to become 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion.

He qualified as a military parachutist on course 50 which ran at RAF Ringway from 8 to 22 February 1943 and served in A Company. The course report states ‘Pte Day: Performance excellent. Make good section leader.’

Douglas Day fought in the campaigns of North West Europe during 1944-45, and was killed in action during the Rhine Crossing, Operation Varsity, while serving as a Sergeant with 1 Platoon.

Sgt Douglas Day died on 24 March 1945 and is now buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
