Corporal Douglas C Wellington

Douglas Carron Wellington commonly known as 'Duke' enlisted into The Royal Berkshire Regiment and later transferred to airborne forces in 1943 while still serving as a Private.

He qualified as a military parachutist on Course 96 which ran at RAF Ringway from 16 to 30 December 1943. The course instructors' notes record that he was 'A confident and capable performer, above average.'

After completing the course he was posted to the Holding Company and later transferred to 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion. During his time with the Battalion he served at various stages with Headquarters, A and B Companies.

He fought with the Battalion in Normandy during the Summer of 1944.

In February 1945 he returned for refresher parachute training at RAF Ringway on Course 153, suggesting that he may have been wounded either in the later stages of the Normandy campaign or the Ardennes.

He subsequently served in Palestine and continued his service in the Army until approximately 1953.
