Sergeant Daniel Lyden

08 Oct 1957 - 13 Feb 1986

Daniel Lyden was born in Manchester in October 1957, and joined the Army in 1975.

After completion of his recruitment training, he was posted to The 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA), who were stationed in Berlin at the time. He completed tours in Cyprus and Northern Ireland before returning to Depot PARA as an Corporal Instructor. During this time, he was a member of the platoon staff for the successful BBC television documentary The Paras (1982).

After two years with Depot, he returned to 1 PARA in B Company with whom he served until 1985, when he was promoted to Sergeant and joined the Battalion Training Team. Later in 1985, he transferred to A Company, and served as the Platoon Sergeant for 2 Platoon, A Coy.

Sgt Lyden was killed by a mortar tree burst on a training accident during Operation Hardfall in Norway in early 1986. An extract from his obituary notice in Pegasus read:

'Sgt Lyden is and will be sadly missed by all who knew and served with him. His professionalism, wit and compassion were an example to us all. He leaves a widow, Sheena, and two young daughters, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

To Sheena, the 1st Battalion also offers its thanks for the Lyden Cup, which she donated in his memory. Sgt Lyden was a rugby enthusiast, and the Cup that bears his name will henceforth be the 1st Battalion's inter-company rugby trophy'.

Daniel Lyden died on 13 February 1986, aged 29 years old.

Danny was born in Manchester. Shortly after his birth his Scottish parents returned to Glasgow, Scotland. He lived in Glasgow, eventually joining 15 PARA, then later joined 1 PARA. He was tragically killed whilst on exercise in Norway.

He left behind two daughters, Claire (then 4) and Laura (then 2). He leaves a legacy behind in the form of two wonderful daughters.

Danny would now have had two yound grandsons Lyden Danny (named after the great man his Grandfather was) and Alfie George. I will always tell them of their Grandfather, Danny 'the Bear' Lyden.

His memory lives on.

A TOP GUY...always recall him singing " Hail Mary from the Cannongate".
Fond memories of a True Airborne Brother.

I was in Norway in February 1986 and had the tremendous honour of carrying Danny Lydon from the puma helicopter to the medics building. The other injured 1 Para lads were seriously injured and deeply upset and told me what a top bloke he was. I was only 20 years old at the time but i remember sitting alone with Danny for a couple of hours whilst awaiting the survivors of the accident being taken to the nearest hospital. Never a day goes by when i don't remember that day in Feb 1986. The RAF pilot and medics on board were incredible in their efforts to do what they could. I was not an airborne soldier but in my 12 years in the Army i worked with 1 and 3 Para quite a lot. Total respect to our airborne forces and i wish Danny's family all the best wishes in the world.
