Lieutenant Charles W Egmore

Charles William Egmore, enlisted in the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment and then volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Egmore undertook parachute training on No 8 Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 10 to 24 February 1942, he was posted to the 4th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment. He commissioned as 2nd Lt and was then posted to the 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion

He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Lt Egmore.

Lt Egmore died at sea on 10 September 1943.

He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
