Private Charles F Chandler

Charles Frederick Chandler, son of Thomas and Sarah Chandler, of Aldringham, Suffolk; husband of Queenie Chandler, of Aldringham, enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Chandler successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to A Company, 4 Platoon, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Chandler was killed in action whilst sharing a slit-trench with Pte Davie Shielson, who was badly wounded (“Off At Last”, page 60), on 19 September 1944, aged 34, and was given an isolated field burial in a wood 30 yards north of railtrack. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 29 November 1945.
