Major Charles E Vickery

Charles Edward Vickery was born in Eire, the son of Ernest Edward and Elizabeth (Cooper) Vickery, of Kent. He married Gwendlyne Ruby Elizabeth Garrish in October 1942. He was commissioned in the Royal Ulster Rifles and volunteered for airborne forces.

Major Vickery successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 19 from 20 to 27 July 1942. He also completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Mjr Vickery was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 36, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 22 April 1947.
