Driver Charles D Spires

Charles David Spires was the son of Charles and Mabel Spires, of Slough, Buckinghamshire. He enlisted in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

Driver Spires successfully completed his parachute training on course number 109 at RAF Ringway, from 27 March to 7 April 1944. His course report stated “Good performer, no hesitation.” He was posted to J Section, 1st Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals, and took part in operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Drv Spires was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial in the Arnhem Communal Roman Catholic Cemetery. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 27 August 1945.
