Bertram Howard Salford was the son of Charles Louis and Gertrude Salford, of Lichfield, Staffordshire and the husband of Eva Salford. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment, and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Salford successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Salford was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 28, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
