Lieutenant Basil Oliver

17 Aug 1944

Basil Oliver was the son of Thomas Sherwood and Dorothy Oliver; husband of Margaret Emily Oliver, of Wallasey, Cheshire. He was given a commission in The Rifle Brigade and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Oliver successfully completed glider training and also completed a parachute course with 8 Parachute Battalion at RAF Ringway and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Lt Oliver was killed in action on 17 August 1944, age 23, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
